A security guard at a downtown discount store is accused of beating and threatening to kill an Indigenous man in an incident that was captured on video and has raised concern among First Nations groups. The guard, who works for Impact Security, is facing charges of assault with a weapon, unauthorized possession of a prohibited or restricted weapon, and uttering threats. The incident occurred at the Dollarama on Portage Avenue, where the accused shoplifter had tried to leave the store without paying for about $95 worth of merchandise. The video, which was shared online, shows the security guard slamming the man onto the floor, slapping, punching, and kicking him while wearing brass knuckles. Police say the shoplifter had threatened to kill the guard and assaulted him when he was stopped. The guard tackled the shoplifter and assaulted him while he was on the ground. The video has prompted outrage and a protest outside the store, with speakers calling for the suspension and review of contracts with Impact Security. The Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs has filed a complaint with the provincial government, which regulates security guards, over the use-of-force practices and the treatment of First Nations people in public. Justice Minister Matt Wiebe has seen the video but would not comment directly, citing the police investigation. He mentioned that the government is working closely with the community and the security guard industry to enhance training for security guards, focusing on cultural sensitivity and de-escalation techniques. The incident has sparked calls for mandatory cultural awareness training for security guards and improved relationships between security companies and Indigenous peoples.
